Archaeologists working on a site located in eastern Serbia have unearthed the well-preserved skeleton of a mammoth. Experts consider them to be a million years old.

Excavations of the site at Viminacium on the Danube River, formerly a Roman military settlement, have uncovered the skeleton. “We believe the skeleton is about one million years old, based on the layers of the grounds where it has been found,” said archaeologist Zoran Markovice of Serbia’s Nature museum. He also mentioned that the skeleton is extremely well preserved.

According to specialists, the mammoth may have died near the Danube on its way from northern Africa and to southern Europe. The mammoth was over 4 meters tall and 10 tons heavy.
